Old Playgrounds

Today’s video prompt is “This Used to be My Playground” by Madonna.  Give it a listen, see what memories it dredges up, and write a little Flashy Fiction based on the song, or the video, or whatever it inspires in you.

Write something and share it!

*Here are the lyrics if you want to read over them

This used to be my playground
This used to be my childhood dream
This used to be the place I ran to
Whenever I was in need
Of a friend
Why did it have to end
And why do they always say

Don’t look back
Keep your head held high
Don’t ask them why
Because life is short
And before you know
You’re feeling old
And your heart is breaking
Don’t hold on to the past
Well that’s too much to ask

This used to be my playground (used to be)
This used to be my childhood dream
This used to be the place I ran to
Whenever I was in need
Of a friend
Why did it have to end
And why do they always say

No regrets
But I wish that you
Were here with me
Well then there’s hope yet
I can see your face
In our secret place
You’re not just a memory
Say goodbye to yesterday (the dream)
Those are words I’ll never say (I’ll never say)

This used to be my playground (used to be)
This used to be our pride and joy
This used to be the place we ran to
That no one in the world could dare destroy
This used to be our playground (used to be)
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
I wish you were standing here with me

This used to be our playground (used to be)
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
The best things in life are always free
Wishing you were here with me

Always

Today’s video prompt is “Always” by Bon Jovi.  It’s a power ballad of longing and regret, of pleading for forgiveness and one more chance.  It’s a song of undying love.  Give it a listen and write a little Flashy Fiction based on the song, or the video, or whatever it inspires in you.

Write something and share it!

*Here are the lyrics if you want to read over them

This Romeo is bleeding, but you can’t see his blood
It’s nothing but some feelings
That this old dog kicked up
It’s been raining since you left me
Now I’m drowning in the flood
You see I’ve always been a fighter
But without you I give up

Now I can’t sing a love song
Like the way it’s meant to be
Well, I guess I’m not that good anymore
But baby, that’s just me

Yeah I, will love you, baby
Always and I’ll be there
Forever and a day, always

I’ll be there ’til the stars don’t shine
‘Til the heavens burst and the words don’t rhyme
I know when I die you’ll be on my mind
And I’ll love you, always

Now your pictures that you left behind
Are just memories of a different life
Some that made us laugh
Some that made us cry
One that made you have to say goodbye

What I’d give to run my fingers through your hair
Touch your lips, to hold you near,
When you say your prayers, try to understand
I’ve made mistakes, I’m just a man

When he holds you close, when he pulls you near
When he says the words you’ve been needing to hear
I’ll wish I was him, ’cause these words are mine,
to say to you ’til the end of time

Yeah I, will love you, baby
Always and I’ll be there
Forever and a day, always

If you told me to cry for you, I could
If you told me to die for you, I would
Take a look at my face
There’s no price I won’t pay
To say these words to you

Well, there ain’t no luck in these loaded dice
But baby, if you give me just one more try
We can pack up our old dreams, and our old lives,
We’ll find a place  where the sun still shines

Yeah I, will love you, baby
Always and I’ll be there
Forever and a day, always

I’ll be there, till the stars don’t shine
‘Til the heavens burst and the words don’t rhyme
I know when I die you’ll be on my mind
And I’ll love you, always
Always

Put Your Lights On

Today’s video prompt is one of my friend’s favorite songs, due in part to the following lines:

There’s an angel, with a hand on my head
She say I’ve got nothing to fear

Give it a look, listen to the *lyrics, and then write a little Flashy Fiction inspired Santana’s and Everlast’s “Put Your Lights On”.

Write something and share it!

*Here are the lyrics if you want to read over them

Hey now, all you sinners
Put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you lovers
Put your lights on, put your lights on

Hey now, all you killers
Put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you children
Leave your lights on, you better leave your lights on

‘Cause there’s a monster living under my bed
Whispering in my ear
There’s an angel, with a hand on my head
She say I’ve got nothing to fear

There’s a darkness deep in my soul
I still got a purpose to serve
So let your light shine, into my hole
God, don’t let me lose my nerve, don’t let me lose my nerve

Hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now
Wo-oh hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now

Hey now, all you sinners
Put your lights on, put your lights on
Hey now, all you children
Leave your lights on, you better leave your lights on

‘Cause there’s a monster living under my bed
Whispering in my ear
There’s an angel, with a hand on my head
She say I’ve got nothing to fear
She say La ill aha ill allah
We all shine like stars
La ill aha ill allah
We all shine like stars
Then we fade away

Fortune Teller

Today’s video prompt is “Fortune Teller” as performed by Robert Plant and Alison Krause.  I dig the cool throwback sound and their harmonies.  There’s not much to the video.  It’s just a shot of the album cover.   Listen to the *lyrics, and then write a little Flashy Fiction inspired “Fortune Teller”.

Write something and share it!

*Here are the lyrics if you want to read over them

Went to the fortune teller
To have my fortune read
I didn’t what to tell her
I had a dizzy feeling in my head

Took a look at my palm
She said “Son you feel kind of warm?”
And she looked into her crystal ball
Said “You’re in love.”

How could that be so?
I thought of all the girls I know.
Said when the next one arrives
You’ll be looking into her eyes.

Left there in a hurry
Looking forward to my big surprise.
The next day I discovered
That the fortune teller told me a lie.

I hurried back down to that woman
As mad as I could be.
I said I didn’t see nobody.
Why had she made a fool out of me?

Then something struck me
As if it came from up above
While looking at the fortune teller,
I fell in love

Now I’m a happy fella
Cause I’m married to the fortune teller.
I’m as happy as we can be.
Now I get my fortune told for free.

She

As the first prompt of November, a month-long celebration of my wife’s birthday (an inside joke), today’s video prompt is “She” as performed by Elvis Costello for the Julia Roberts/Hugh Grant movie, “Notting Hill“.  My favorite stanza is the last, particularly these two lines:

“Me I’ll take her laughter and her tears
And make them all my souvenirs”

Give the video a look, listen to the *lyrics, and then write a little Flashy Fiction inspired “She”.

Write something and share it!

*Here are the lyrics if you want to read over them

She may be the face I can’t forget
A trace of pleasure or regret
May be my treasure or the price
I have to pay

She may be the song that summer sings
May be the chill that autumn brings
May be a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day

She may be the beauty or the beast
May be the famine or the feast
May turn each day into a heaven
Or a hell

She may be the mirror of my dream
A smile reflected in a stream
She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell

She who always seems so happy in a crowd
Whose eyes can be so private and so proud
No-one’s allowed to see them
When they cry
She maybe the love that cannot hope to last
May come to me from shadows of the past
That I’ll remember ’til
The day I die

She may be the reason I survive
The why and wherefore I’m alive
The one I’ll care for through the
Rough and rainy years

Me I’ll take her laughter and her tears
And make them all my souvenirs
For where she goes I’ve got to be
The meaning of my life is she

Spiritual High (State of Independence)

Today’ is another video prompt.  Give it a look, listen to the *lyrics, and then write a little Flashy Fiction inspired Moodswing’s “Spiritual High (State of Independence)” featuring Chrissie Hynde.

Write something and share it!

*Here are the lyrics if you want to read over themSounds like a signal from you
Bring me to meet your sound
And I will bring you to my heart

Love like a signal you call
Touching my body my soul
Bring to me, you to meet me here

Home be the temple of your heart
Home be the body of your love
Just like Holy water to my lips

Yes I do know how I survive
Yes I do know why I’m alive
To love and be with you
Day by day by day by day

Time, time again, it is said
We will hear, we will see
See it all-in his wisdom-hear
His truth will abound the land
This truth will abound the land
This State of independence shall be
This State of independence shall be

(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)
(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)

Love like a signal you call
Touching my body my soul
Bring to me, you to meet me here
Home be the temple of your heart
Home be the body of your love
Just like Holy water to my lips

Hey

Yes I do know how I survive
Yes I do know why I’m alive
To love and be with you
Day by day by day by day

Time, time again, it is said
We will hear, we will see
See it all-in his wisdom-hear
His truth will abound the land
This truth will abound the land

This State of independence shall be
This State of independence shall be

(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)
(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)
(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)
(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)

This State of independence shall be

His truth will abound the land

(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)
(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)
(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)
(Hey, hey Yayah yaya oh)

Battle of Evermore

Today’ is another video prompt.  Give it a look, listen to the *lyrics, and then write a little Flashy Fiction inspired Led Zepplin’s “Battle of Evermore”, as sung by Alison Krauss and Zep’s Robert Plant.

Write something and share it!

*Here are the lyrics if you want to read over them

Queen of Light took her bow
And then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom
And walked the night alone.
Oh, dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morning light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight
And time will tell us all.
Oh, throw down your plow and hoe,
Rest not to lock your homes.
Side by side we wait the might
Of the darkest of them all.
I hear the horses’ thunder
Down in the valley blow,
I’m waiting for the angels of Avalon,
Waiting for the eastern glow.
The apples of the valley hold,
The seas of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care,
Repay, do not forget, no, no.
Oh, dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morning light.
The apples turn to brown and black, the tyrant’s face is red.
Oh the war is common cry, pick up you swords and fly.
The sky is filled with good and bad
That mortals never know.
Oh, well, the night is long, the beads of time pass slow,
Tired eyes on the sunrise, waiting for the eastern glow.
The pain of war cannot exceed
The woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall,
The ring wraiths ride in black, ride on.
Sing as you raise your bow,
Shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night
That lights the face so cold.
Oh dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the mornin’ light.
The magic runes are writ in gold
To bring the balance back, bring it back.
At last the sun is shining, the clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness
The sunlight blinds his eyes.
